The staff and governing council welcome you to Coorara Preschool which is a ‘hidden gem’, tucked in behind Coorara Primary, with a wonderful green and spacious outdoor learning area. We are a small, family orientated preschool with a high percentage of families living locally and then transitioning into the neighbouring primary school with which we enjoy a growing, close relationship.

Our Philosophy

Coorara – “Meeting Place Under the Clouds”

Coorara Preschool is a community of life-long learners who share a sense of ‘belonging’ and work together in partnership in a warm, nurturing and respectful environment.

It is a place where children celebrate ‘being’ and participate in stimulating and challenging play-based learning – where they can explore, engage, interact, discover, imagine, create, inquire and grow.

It is a place where ‘becoming’ is valued – high expectations and equity for all the community where children are encouraged in their journey to be engaged and contributing learners.

Enrolment

Please come in and complete a preliminary enrolment form at anytime.

Preschools have catchment areas within which families are given priority of access, however generally parents are able to choose the preschool of their choice. Availability of places is limited by staffing and building size.

The director will contact you towards the end of the term prior to pre entry regarding place availability.

Fees

•  $30 for pre entry

•  $100 per term for sessional preschool

Fees are due by the end of week 5 each term and can be paid by cash, cheque or via direct deposit into the kindy account. GST is not charged on preschool fees. The option to pay via instalments is also available.

Transition to school

Our strong relationships with the local primary schools support children’s transition to school. In particular, we have regular interaction with Coorara Primary, our neighbouring school; including special event visits, shared play and use of some facilities.

From mid-term 3, Coorara Primary offer a 10 week comprehensive two hour orientation programme called Coorara Cubs for children enrolled for the following year. This is in addition to their regular preschool hours.

Our preschool staff support children transitioning into all schools in our area with visits and sharing of children’s learning progress.

Curriculum, assessment and reporting

The Australian National Curriculum – Early Years Learning Framework guides our plans.

Our specific curriculum approach is play-based learning, with a particular focus on the development of the social skills and dispositions for learning that form the basis for children’s literacy and numeracy learning. Individual learning plans are developed in consultation with parents based on children’s interests and needs, and developed goals inform the site learning plan. The ‘You Can Do it’ and PALS (Playing and Learning to Socialise) programmes are used, as well as the Child Protection Curriculum. This year Coorara Preschool has become an ELLA (Early Learning Languages Australia) site with Spanish as our chosen language.

Regular feedback on your child's achievements, interests and concerns will be provided informally throughout the year, during parent teacher meetings to develop and review individual learning plans and in a formal written report in your child's last term at kindergarten.

Health issues and practices

Coorara Preschool has healthy eating and sun smart policies. We ask all parents to provide fresh fruit for snack time and a healthy lunch, along with a drink bottle filled with water. Please note that for allergy reasons we are a ‘nut free’ centre and ready to accommodate other dietary or health needs as they arise. Children are required to bring a hat each kindy day.

Parent/Caregiver Involvement

Parents input and feedback is highly valued and you are always welcome to spend time at the preschool. There are a variety of ways in which you can take an active part in maintaining the high standard of service that Coorara Preschool offers.

Our centre is managed by parents and staff, which make up our governing council. This group is responsible for policy making, maintenance, fundraising, social events and financial administration. The governing council meets two times a term. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings.

Session Times

Pre-Entry

This year we are able to offer five pre-entry ‘come and play’ ninety-minute sessions on Thursday afternoons during term 4 for children enrolled for 2018. These sessions support children to transition into kindy, becoming familiar with the environment, some routines and the staff. If unable to attend these planned pre-entry sessions, it may be possible to visit at another time.

Early Entry

Aboriginal children & children under the Guardianship of the Minister are entitled to 12 hours preschool from age 3.

Children with additional needs (such as a disability, speech/language issues etc.) can apply for early entry, with the written recommendation of a medical practitioner or other medical professional, however places / attendance is limited to funding availability.

Kindergarten Sessions

In South Australia, children are entitled to attend 600 hours (30 hours per fortnight) in the year before starting school.

Our session times are currently:

Tuesdays & Wednesdays  8.30am - 3:00pm

Alternate Thursdays (weeks 2, 4, 6, 8, 10)  8:30am – 12.30pm

Playgroup Sessions

Coorara playgroup is offered during term kindy sessions on alternate Thursdays 9.00 – 11.00am.

Playgroup is a great opportunity to meet local parents as you play with your children in the preschool, utilising the activities and resources already set up for kindy, including toys and activities for younger children. Playgroup children are welcome and encouraged to join in the mid-morning story and song time and other routines including fruit.

Bring: Hat, water bottle, piece fresh fruit and gold coin donation per family.

Parents, carers, grandparents and relatives are all welcome at Coorara playgroup.
